But the fact remains that most men had vastly more choices than most women, back then (and, to a lesser extent, now). Many jobs were closed to women, and classified ads routinely specified an age range for the women they would hire, and many women were fired after getting pregnant.

Women were fired from good jobs in droves after the men came back from WWII, simply to give the jobs to returning male vets. I’m sure some men hated their jobs and some women loved f/t motherhood and housework, but generally speaking most people prefer having more options to fewer.
